PTE Overview

PTE Academic is a computer-based academic English language test designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers for university study. The test is accepted by thousands of universities and colleges worldwide, as well as by government agencies such as UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for student visa applications.

PTE Academic is an integrated skills exam, which means that it tests your ability to use all four language skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – in a single exam. This makes it different from other exams such as IELTS or TOEFL, which usually test these skills separately.

The test lasts around 3 hours and is divided into three main sections:

1. Speaking and Writing (together)

2. Reading

3. Listening

There is also a short break between each section.

The Speaking and Writing section consists of two tasks: Personal Introduction and Essay. In the Personal Introduction, you will record a short introduction about yourself, which will be played back to the examiner during the Essay task. In the Essay task, you will be asked to write an essay on a given topic in response to a question. This task tests your ability to express and develop an argument clearly and coherently.

The Reading section consists of three tasks: Multiple-choice questions, Re-order paragraphs and Fill in the blanks. In the Multiple-choice questions task, you will read a passage and answer questions based on the information in the passage. In the Re-order paragraphs task, you will read a text with numbered paragraphs and rearrange them in the correct order. In the Fill in the blanks task, you will read a text with some words missing and fill in the gaps with the missing words. This task tests your ability to understand main ideas, implications and attitudes expressed in a text, as well as your ability to identify specific information.

The Listening section consists of four tasks: Summaries spoken text, Multiple-choice questions, Fill in the blanks and Highlight incorrect words. In the Summaries spoken text task, you will listen to a recording and summaries it using one sentence. In the Multiple-choice questions task, you will listen to a recording and answer questions based on the information in the recording. In the Fill in the blanks task, you will listen to a recording and fill in the gaps with the missing words. In the Highlight incorrect words task, you will listen to a recording and identify which words in a transcript are spelt incorrectly. This task tests your ability to understand main ideas, implications and attitudes expressed in a spoken text, as well as your ability to identify specific information.

PTE Academic is marked on a scale of 10-90 points. The Speaking and Writing section is worth 40 points, while the Reading and Listening sections are each worth 20 points.
