GRE Overview

The GRE® General Test measures critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study.

The test is intended for use by graduate schools to help make admissions decisions. It is not a pass/fail test, but rather provides score data that can be used as one criterion among many in considering applicants for admission.

The GRE® Quantitative Reasoning measure assesses basic math skills, understanding of elementary mathematical concepts and ability to reason quantitatively. Questions are designed to test your skills at the beginning, middle and end of a mathematics course. The content of this section is divided into two main categories: arithmetic and algebra.

The GRE® Verbal Reasoning measure tests your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it, to analyze relationships among component parts of sentences and to recognize relationships among words and concepts.

The GRE® Analytical Writing measure tests your critical thinking and analytical writing skills. It consists of two separately timed tasks: a 30-minute “Analyze an Issue” task and a 30-minute “Analyze an Argument” task.

The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-delivered test year-round at most locations around the world and as a paper-delivered test up to three times a year in areas where computer-delivered testing is not yet available.
